The Porsche
Museum

A visit to Zuffenhausen in October 2025, and the museum's 2019 celebration of the 914's 50th birthday.

01Our visit, October 2025

In October 2025 Vincente D'Ingianni and his wife visited the Porsche Museum at Porscheplatz in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the home of Porsche.

Outside the museum stands the Porscheplatz sculpture: three white columns, each holding a 911 high above the roundabout. Inside, the collection runs from the earliest Porsche designs to the 911 and, closest to this site's heart, the 914.

The photos on this page are all from that visit. Click any photo for the full-size original.

02Background: the 914 turns 50 (2019)

Six years before our visit, in 2019, the Porsche Museum marked the 914's 50th birthday with a special show, “50 Years of the 914 – Typically Porsche”, from 2 June to 7 July.

The show opened on Sunday 2 June with Typically Porsche Day, which was free to attend. Porsche invited every 914 fan and expected more than 120 owners to bring their own 914s, many of them from the clubs. Expert panels looked back at the car's development and racing. Former race engineer Roland Kussmaul, chassis developer and racer Hans Clausecker, engineer and racer Günter Steckkönig and author Jürgen Lewandowski were on one. On another, Porsche designer Anthony Hatter, former development engineer Jürgen Kapfer and race-car product developer Hermann-Josef Steinmetz discussed the mid-engined idea and where it goes next.

The show itself had twelve cars covering the 914 and what it inspired. Exhibits included:

  • the four-cylinder 914/4 and six-cylinder 914/6 production cars, and the first 914 ever built
  • one of the two eight-cylinder 914 S prototypes
  • the 914/6 GT that the German motorsport authority ONS used from 1972 as the world's first safety car
  • a privately owned reconstruction project with a 350 PS V8 from a 928 GTS
  • a 916
  • 914-based designs by Albrecht Graf von Goertz and the French coachbuilder Heuliez

For the full story of the jubilee, with Porsche's own photos and video, read “50 Years of the 914” on the Porsche Newsroom ↗. The release does not say which 916 was shown. For the first 916, see Brutus, and for all eleven cars see the 916 History and registry.
